The Jobs We Turn Down, and Who to Ring Instead

A handyman who says yes to everything is telling you they have not yet met the job that catches them out.

Anything Gas

Boilers, hobs, fires, and any pipework carrying gas. This requires Gas Safe registration, it is illegal without it, and the failure mode is not a leaky tap. There is no version of this we will attempt.

Consumer Units and Rewires

I am Part P certified, which covers sockets, switches, fittings and circuits within scope. A consumer unit replacement or a full rewire goes to a full-time electrician with the test equipment and the volume of practice to do it properly.

Anything Structural

Removing a wall, altering a lintel, cutting a joist for a pipe run. If it holds something up, it needs someone who calculates rather than estimates, and usually building control involvement.

Roofs Above Single Storey

Not a competence issue, a safety one. Working at height properly requires equipment and training we do not have, and a ladder against a gutter is how people end up in hospital.

What Referring On Looks Like

We keep a short list of people we have actually watched work, we pass it on, and we take nothing for the referral. If someone offers you a “mate who can do it cheap” and takes a cut, both halves of that arrangement should worry you.
